Why Baby Boomers Should Get Tested for Hepatitis C

Why Baby Boomers Should Get Tested for Hepatitis CHepatitis C Fact

While anyone can get Hepatitis C, more than 75% of adults infected are baby boomers, people born from 1945 through 1965. Most people do not even know that they have been infected.  There is also no real explanation as to why baby boomers have the highest infection rates.  They current thinking is that baby boomers did experience a lot with drugs when they were younger, and could have been infected by sharing needles.  In addition, blood testing was not what it is today and many born between 1944 through 1965 were exposed to blood that contained the virus.  Here are some facts that might interest you:

• Baby boomers are five times more likely to have Hepatitis C. ( Most likely because of the reasons stated above.)
• Liver disease, liver cancer, and deaths from Hepatitis C are on the rise.
• The longer people live with Hepatitis C, the more likely they are to develop serious,
life-threatening liver disease.
• Getting tested can help people learn if they are infected.  It will also get them into lifesaving care and
treatment.
• Treatments are available that can eliminate the Hepatitis C virus from the body.  This prevents liver damage,
cirrhosis, and even liver cancer.

The CDC is working hard to increase the public’s awareness of Hepatitis C.  It has published articles and is some massive advertising.  I applaud their efforts.  Do not dismiss Hepatitis C as just something related to HIV.  You will be doing yourself and your loved ones a disservice by not getting tested.
